PERUVIAN ANDES COMMUNITY

Embark on a transformative journey in Peru, where your students will collaborate with the Willoq community on projects that improve vital infrastructure such as health centers, sewage systems, and water supply. In addition, students will immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of the Incas, exploring the breathtaking Andes, and visiting Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Throughout this experience, they’ll have the opportunity to practice their Spanish and engage with the local culture.

Sample itinerary for Peruvian Andes community-based trips:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE -  LIMA
  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to Lima.
  • Arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport, where you will meet your Tour Director. It’s time to begin your trip!
  • Transfer to the hotel via motor coach and check in to your rooms before enjoying your first dinner at a local restaurant.
DAY 2 · LIMA - CUSCO - SACRED VALLEY - WILLOQ
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Head back to Jorge Chavez Airport to catch a domestic flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, you’ll transfer to the village of Willoq in the Sacred Valley with a stop for dinner at a local restaurant along the way.
  • Arrive in the community of Willoq, where you will be staying over the next few days. Located near Ollantaytambo, Willoq is a living Inca town with a population that preserves traditional Peruvian customs and practices. This vibrant community, known for its experiential tourism, offers visitors a chance to engage with their unique lifestyle, including ancient farming techniques and intricate weaving.
  • Meet your hosts and get acquainted with your new surroundings, before enjoying a welcome dinner with the community. 
  • Check in at your hotel in Ollantaytambo for a well-deserved night of sleep.
DAYS 3 TO 6 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN WILLOQ
  • Begin each day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director. 
  • Over the next four days, you’ll be involved in a community project. Students will work on a "Minga" community project with the Willoq association, focusing on improving local infrastructure such as health centres, sewage systems, and water supply. Your group will work on the project 4 to 6 hours. (Lunches will be provided by your hosts.
  • In the afternoons, you will discover the local culture through various activities, including agriculture, weaving, learning traditional music, sports, participating in community rituals and ceremonies, visiting religious sites, and exploring local flora and fauna. 
  • Have dinner with the community before returning to your hotel in Ollantaytambo at the end of every day.
DAY 7 · WILLOQ - OLLANTAYTAMBO - AGUA CALIENTES
  • Begin the day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director. 
  • Discover Ollantaytambo, the historic village that was once a centre of Inca resistance against the Conquistadors, known for its Incan ruins and breathtaking views. 
  • Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before taking the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.
  • Arrive in Aguas Calientes and check in to your rooms at the hotel before enjoying a lovely dinner at a local restaurant.
DAY 8 · MACHU PICCHU - AGUA CALIENTES
  • After an early breakfast, depart on a guided tour of Machu Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas.
  • Uncover the mysteries of this iconic Inca site from the 15th century, perched 2,430 metres above sea level. Enjoy the stunning views, discover the various sectors of the site (agricultural, urban, sacred), and take photos from the House of the Guardian.
  • Take a moment to sit down and enjoy your packed lunch while enjoying the view.
  • Head to to Aguas Calientes in the afternoon to explore the local markets and enjoy a swim in the area’s natural hot springs.
  • Return to the hotel for dinner, followed by a good night’s sleep. 
DAY 9 · AGUA CALIENTES - SACRED VALLEY - MISMAI
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Take a train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, where you will board a coach to the Andean village of Mismai.
  • Admire the salt pans and panoramic views of the Sacred Valley during a visit of Salinas de Maras.
  • Continue to Moray to see the Inca agricultural research center with its impressive circular terraces. Enjoy your packed lunches along the way. 
  • Arrive in Mismai, where you will check in at the hotel and enjoy dinner on site, before heading back to your rooms for the night. 
DAY 10 · MISMAI - PISAC - CUSCO
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Visit the village of Pisac, known for its Inca archaeological site. Explore the ruins and visit the vibrant Pisac market for fresh produce and local crafts, including alpaca wool items.
  • You’ll be stopping at a local restaurant for a traditional lunch. 
  • Explore the former Inca capital on a city tour of Cusco. Marvel at Plaza de Armas, visit the San Pedro Market, and walk among the historic Sacsayhuamán ruins.
  • Check in at the hotel in Cusco and enjoy dinner on site, before heading back to your rooms for the night.
DAY 11 · CUSCO - LIMA
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Continue exploring Cusco’s historical sites, including Qorikancha (or Temple of the Sun), renowned for its gold-covered walls and intricate architecture.
  • Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to Cusco Airport to catch your domestic flight to Lima.
  • Arrive in Lima and transfer to your hotel, where you will check in and relax before heading out to a local restaurant for dinner. 
DAY 12 · LIMA - DEPARTURE
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to Jorge Chavez International Airport to catch your flight home.
