ECUADORIAN AMAZON COMMUNITY

Experience the vibrant culture of the Ecuadorian Amazon while giving back to the community on an immersive service learning trip. Sample itinerary for Ecuadorian Amazon community-based trips:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE - QUITO
  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to Quito.
  • Arrive at Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport, where you will meet your Tour Director and hop aboard a locally chartered motor coach. It’s time to begin your trip!
  • Have dinner at a local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night’s rest.

DAY 2 · QUITO

  • Breakfast and orientation session at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Visit Mitad del Mundo, the iconic site located on the Equator at 0° latitude, and discover the diverse cultures that make up Ecuador's population during your exploration of the Ethnographic Museum.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. 
  • Explore Quito's UNESCO-listed Old Town, a colonial-era treasure featuring cobblestone streets, historic churches, and monasteries.
  • Have dinner at a lovely local restaurant and head to the hotel for a good night's rest.

DAY 3 · QUITO - MACHACUYACU

  • Breakfast and orientation session at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Depart for the Community of the Ecuadorian Amazon, where you will be hosted over the next days. You’ll stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the way. 
  • Arrive in the small indigenous village, home to approximately 120 people who rely primarily on agriculture. For over 15 years, the community has been deeply involved in conservation efforts, protecting their land and culture through sustainable development projects. 
  • Take part in your first integration activity with the community before heading to your dormitories for your first dinner and overnight stay.

DAYS 4 TO 7 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN MACHACUYACU

  • Over the next few days, you’ll be involved in a community project, collaborating with locals on sustainable farming projects, learning about their culture and environmental challenges caused by climate change. You’ll work on the project for 4 to 6 hours each day.
  • All meals and will be provided by the community during your stay.
  • In the afternoons, you'll take part in cultural and educational activities, including a visit to Puerto Misahualli, a peaceful village with an Amazonian atmosphere where you can relax on the beach along the Rio Napo. You’ll also enjoy nature walks in the rainforest, attend a medicinal plants workshop, participate in a chocolate-making workshop, explore local art and craftsmanship, and visit sustainable agricultural sites to learn about traditional farming techniques and the environmental challenges faced by local farmers.
  • Return to your community dormitories at the end of every day for a well-deserved night’s rest.

DAY 8 · MACHACUYACU - BAÑOS

  • Enjoy your final breakfast before saying your farewells to the community.
  • Experience the breathtaking power of Pailón del Diablo, a stunning waterfall, and cross its suspended bridge for an unforgettable view of the Devil’s Cauldron.
  • Make a pit stop for lunch a local restaurant.  
  • In the afternoon, visit Casa del Arbol for a chance to view the Tungurahua volcano (weather permitting).
  • Arrive in Baños, an adventure tourism hub nestled in the Andes, surrounded by lush forests and waterfalls.
  • Have dinner at a lovely local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night's sleep.

DAY 9 · BAÑOS - QUITO

  • Breakfast and orientation session at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Relax in the therapeutic thermal waters of El Salado Springs, a perfect way to start the day.
  • Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. 
  • On your way back to Quito, take in the breathtaking views of several active volcanoes, including Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, Ilinizas, and Rucu Pichincha.
  • Explore the Mariscal Market in Quito for some last-minute souvenirs and a last chance to practice your Spanish.
  • Have dinner at a lovely local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night's sleep.

DAY 10 · QUITO - DEPARTURE

  • Breakfast and orientation session at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport to catch your flight home.
