Sample itinerary for Tropical Forest community-based trips in Costa Rica:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE - SAN JOSÉ
  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to San José.
  • Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport, where you will meet your Tour Director and hop aboard a locally chartered motor coach. 
  • Have dinner at a local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night’s rest. 

DAY 2 · SAN JOSÉ - SAN JUAN DE PENAS BLANCAS

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Depart for the community of San Carlos, where you will meet with your host family and familiarize yourself with your home for the next days. Located in the province of Alajuela, deep within the rainforest, valleys, mountains, and rivers, the rural community of San Carlos has 400 permanent residents whose primary economic activity is agriculture.
  • Have lunch with your family before participating in various workshops with the community members to learn about local culture (dance, cooking, sewing, etc.).
  • Enjoy a hearty dinner, followed by your first overnight stay with your host families.

DAYS 3 TO 6 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN SAN JUAN DE PENAS BLANCAS

  • Start each day with a typical Costa Rican breakfast prepared by your host families.
  • For the next four days, you’ll be involved in a community project, contributing to the construction of a future community hall or performing other important tasks like painting schools, setting up vegetable gardens, or performing small clean-up tasks. (Packed lunches will be prepared by your host families.)
  • In the afternoons, you will discover the local culture through various activities, including meeting Fuerza de Amor—a volunteer organization promoting community exchanges and environmental awareness, participating in sports and cultural activities with the local community, hiking the Bendición de Dios waterfall trail to experience one of the area’s hidden gems, and visiting La Esperanza Farm to learn about sustainable farming practices and the production of organic goods. 
  • End the day with dinner and an overnight stay with your host families.

DAY 7 · SAN JUAN DE PENAS BLANCAS

  • Start the day with a typical Costa Rican breakfast with your host families.
  • Hike through the beautiful landscapes of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, with its turquoise waters and lush flora and fauna. 
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a tubing excursion on the Celeste River and a relaxing swim in its serene waters. 
  • Celebrate your final evening with the community over dinner, and head to your host families for your final overnight stay.

DAY 8 · SAN JUAN PENAS DE BLANCAS - ARENAL - PUNTARENAS

  • Enjoy a final hearty breakfast with your host families, before saying your farewells. 
  • Depart for Arenal where you'll experience an exciting canopy zipline tour, gliding through the treetops for incredible views of the wildlife refuge, followed by lunch at a local restaurant.
  • Go for a relaxing swim in the hot springs at Chollín and take in the beautiful scenery.
  • Depart for the Puntarenas coastal region before checking in at the hotel and enjoying a group dinner. 

DAY 9 · PUNTARENAS - SAN JOSÉ

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Spend the morning at Playa Manta, soaking up the sun and enjoying a beachside picnic lunch. 
  • Stop at the San José Craft Market for some souvenir shopping on your way back to the capital of Costa Rica.
  • Check in at your hotel in San José before enjoying a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 10 · SAN JOSÉ - DEPARTURE

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to Juan Santamaría International Airport to catch your flight home.
