Sample itinerary for Rural Mountain community-based trips in Costa Rica:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE -  SAN JOSÉ

  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to San José.
  • Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport, where you will meet your Tour Director and hop aboard a locally chartered motor coach. 
  • Have dinner at a local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night’s rest. 

DAY 2 · SAN JOSÉ - HERRADURA DE RIVAS

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Head to Herradura de Rivas, with a stop for lunch at a local restaurant along the way. 
  • Visit a local artisanal cheese factory, where the owners will share the steps to their sustainable process of making Swiss cheese. You’ll even be lucky enough to sample their delicious products!
  • Arrive in Herradura, a rural village near Chirripó National Park, where you will be hosted over the next few days. 
  • Meet with your host families and take part in your first integration activity with the community before your first dinner and overnight stay with your families.

DAYS 3 TO 5 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN HERRADURA DE RIVAS

  • Start each day with a hearty breakfast with your host families.
  • Over the next few days, you’ll be involved in a community project that contributes to essential needs, like building infrastructure or working on agricultural projects. You’ll work on the project 4 to 6 hours each day. Throughout your time in the community, you’ll experience complete language and cultural immersion, learning about the daily life, values, and traditions of Costa Ricans. (Packed lunches will be prepared by your families every day.)
  • Spend your afternoons exploring the region with a range of outdoor activities, including traditional fishing, a forest hike near the village followed by a relaxing time in the natural hot springs, a dance workshop, and a hike to the Rio Blanco, where you’ll have the opportunity to swim in a beautiful natural setting.
  • Return to your host families at the end of every day for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

DAY 7 · HERRADURA DE RIVAS - SALITRE

  • Enjoy your final breakfast with your host families before saying your farewells.
  • Meet your group and depart for Salitre, where you’ll be staying these next couple of days. You’ll stay in the Bribri community, an indigenous village nestled in the heart of a lush forest. 
  • Sit down for a delicious community lunch upon arrival in Salitre. 
  • In the afternoon, get to know your new surroundings as you discover a sacred site for the Bribri Indigenous community on a scenic hike and refreshing swim in the river.
  • Enjoy a hearty dinner with your community, followed by an overnight stay in a dormitory-style lodge in the Bribri community.

DAY 7 · HERRADURA DE RIVAS - SALITRE

  • Start the day with a typical Costa Rican breakfast with your host community.
  • In the morning, you will complete a short community project at the community's elementary school, followed by lunch in the community.
  • In the afternoon, you will discover more about Bribri culture by participating in a craft project with community members.
  • Enjoy a hearty dinner with your community, followed by an overnight stay in a dormitory-style lodge in the Bribri community.

DAY 8 · SALITRE - UVITA

  • Enjoy your final breakfast with your host community before saying your farewells.
  • Explore several indigenous villages with your Tour Director to learn about the Terraba, Boruca, and Bribri peoples. The tour also includes a visit to the Site Museum Farm 6.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the indigenous communities.
  • Begin the drive to Uvita where you will check in at the hotel and enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant. 

DAY 9 · UVITA - SAN JOSÉ

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Spend some time exploring Marino Ballena National Park, a renowned spot for humpback whales and dolphins, famous for its beaches and natural rock formation resembling a whale’s tail.
  • Have lunch at a local restaurant before beginning the drive towards San José.  
  • Make a pit stop at Orotina Market, known for its stalls filled with fresh local and exotic fruits.
  • Arrive in San José, where you will check in at the hotel and enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 10 · SAN JOSÉ - DEPARTURE

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to Juan Santamaría International Airport to catch your flight home.
