Galápagos Islands Service-Learning & Science Trips

Embark on a volunteer trip to the Galápagos Islands, where volcanic activity and ocean currents create a fascinating melting pot of marine species and unusual animal life. Your students will participate in community-service activities and learn about this unique environment known as a 'living museum and showcase of evolution.' Sample itinerary for Galápagos Islands trips

DAY 1

  • Head off on your flight to Ecuador.

DAY 2

  • Enjoy a visit to the Interpretation Center of San Cristobal! Learn more about the origins of the archipelago, its fauna, its flora as well as its history and first inhabitants.
  • Admire the amazing vegetation, birds, and panorama during the 2-hour hike to the top of Tirejatas hill. Head towards Tijeratas Bay where you will practice snorkeling or kayaking (time permitting).

DAY 3

  • Galapagos Ecosystem Foundation, a non-governmental organization, will welcome you and present their environmental project: the protection and reforestation of the mangrove and of the island's maritime shores. You will be organized in working teams and be dedicated to this specific mission. The community project will be carried out over a period of 4 hours of work, on 4 days during your trip.
  • Visit the Loberia: a beautiful beach with great snorkeling spots! During the tour you will be able to observe sea turtles, rays, sea lions and many species of colorful fishes.

DAY 4

  • Second day of your community project with the Galapagos Ecosystem Foundation.
  • Visit El Progreso village, established in 1880 by a colony of prisoners sent from the continent to work in a sugar factory.
  • Explore El Junco lagoon, one of the only sources of freshwater in the archipelago.
  • Depart towards La Galapaguera Turtles Reserve to observe this emblematic animal of the archipelago

DAY 5

  • Third day of service learning at the Galapagos Ecosystem Foundation.
  • Depart for a maritime excursion that will take you to the islet of Léon Dormido (Kicker rock). As it's not possible to dock, you will observe the island from a boat, a panga ride, and do some bird watching.

DAY 6

  • Transfer to the harbor, hop aboard the ferry and depart towards your next destination: Santa Cruz Island. Next stop: Puerto Ayora!
  • Depart for the visit of Charles Darwin Science Center, a research center aiming at the conservation of the Galapagos ecosystems. the Research Station is essential to provide scientific knowledge and technical advice to the Government of Ecuador to ensure the conservation of the Galapagos

DAY 7

  • Fourth day of your community project with the Galapagos Ecosystem Foundation! This time, it will take place on the shores of Santa Cruz Island.
  • Hop aboard a boat and depart towards Las Grietas, a natural site that will offer you at the same time a perfect place for snorkeling, and breathtaking landscapes composed of a lava field and a forest of cactus.

DAY 8

  • Last morning of community service with the Galapagos Ecosystem Foundation.
  • Start a 2.5km hike towards a white-sand beach called Tortuga Bay hosting sharks, sea iguanas and even flamingos!

DAY 9

  • Before you leave Santa Cruz Island, you still have two sites to discover: the lava tunnels and Los Gemelos Craters.
  • Hop on the ferry from Santa Cruz Island to Baltra Island!
  • Take off aboard your flight towards Guayaquil. Let's enjoy some time at the craft market of Guayaquil! Seize the opportunity to practise your Spanish while buying some souvenirs!

DAY 10

  • Meet with your driver, load your luggage onto the motorcoach and head off to Olmedo Airport in Guayaquil Airport to check in for your flight.
  • Say goodbye to your Tour Director and board your flight home. What will be your best travel story?
