Sample itinerary for Lake Atitlán community-based trips in Guatemala:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE - GUATEMALA CITY
  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to Guatemala City.
  • Arrive at La Aurora International Airport, where you’ll meet your Tour Director and board your motor coach. It’s time to begin your trip!
  • Check in at your hotel before enjoying a delicious dinner with your group.
DAY 2 · GUATEMALA CITY - SAN JUAN LA LAGUNA
  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director. 
  • Travel to Chichicastenango, where you'll visit the largest and oldest market in Central America.
  • Have lunch in Chichicastenango before hopping on the motor coach to San Juan La Laguna, where you will be hosted over the next days. 
  • Arrive in San Juan La Laguna, a picturesque village located on the west side of Lake Atitlán. The population of about 6,000 Tz'utujil and K'iche people thrive on rich artisanal traditions and fair-trade cooperatives, which support local crafts and coffee production.
  • Meet with your host families and take part in your first integration activity with the community before your first dinner and overnight stay with your families.

DAYS 3 TO 6 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN SAN JUAN LA LAGUNA

  • Start each day with a hearty breakfast with your host families. 
  • Over the next few days, you’ll be involved in a community project aimed to clean up Lake Atitlán and help preserve local bee habitats, contributing to the environmental health of this stunning region while engaging with the local community (exact project to be determined). You’ll work on the project 4 to 6 hours every day (lunches will be provided by your families). 
  • Spend your afternoons exploring cultural activities, including a local mural and art tour, Lake Atitlán boat tour, learning Latin dances, kayaking on Lake Atitlán, visiting traditional weaving cooperatives, attending a Mayan and Nahual ceremony, hiking to the Kiaq’ Aiswaan, and discovering local agricultural and cacao practices.
  • Return to your host families at the end of every day for dinner and a good night’s sleep.

DAY  7 · SAN JUAN LA LAGUNA - IXIMCHE - ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

  • Enjoy a final hearty breakfast with your host families. 
  • Participate in one last morning of service-learning in San Juan La Laguna before sharing a farewell lunch with your host families.
  • Travel to Antigua Guatemala with a stop at Iximché, a significant archaeological site of the Kaqchikel Mayans.
  • Have dinner at a lovely local restaurant and check in at the hotel in Antigua Guatemala. 

DAY 8 · ANTIGUA GUATEMALA

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director. 
  • Embark on a guided tour of the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage site, nestled between three majestic volcanoes.
  • Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, followed by free time to explore the city.
  • End the day with a final group dinner at a local restaurant before returning to the hotel for the night. 

DAY 9 · ANTIGUA GUATEMALA - DEPARTURE

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to La Aurora International Airport to catch your flight home.
