Sample itinerary for Caribbean Coast community-based trips in Costa Rica:

DAY 1 · DEPARTURE - SAN JOSÉ
  • Meet with your group at the airport and take off aboard your flight to San José.
  • Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport, where you will meet your Tour Director and hop aboard a locally chartered motor coach. It’s time to begin your trip!
  • Have dinner at a local restaurant before checking in at the hotel for a good night’s rest.

DAY 2 · SAN JOSÉ - YORKIN

  • Begin the day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Depart for the Bribri community of Yorkin, where you'll be hosted over the next few days. You’ll travel through Cahuita along the Caribbean coastal road, stopping for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant along the way.
  • Continue your travels by boat along the Yorkin River and arrive in the village of Bratsi, home to the Bribri people. Located in the Talamanca region of Costa Rica, this indigenous community offers a unique opportunity to learn about Bribri culture, language, and traditions. The Bribri people are primarily subsistence farmers, relying on practices like cacao cultivation, agriculture, and hunting. You'll gain insight into their daily life, including their strong connection to the land, sustainable farming techniques, and their rich cultural heritage.
  • Begin your journey by exploring the village of Yorkin and its rich cultural heritage with a local guide, giving you a glimpse of the place where you'll be spending the next few days.
  • Immerse yourself in your first community integration experience and enjoy a delicious dinner with the locals.
  • Check in to your lodge nestled in the Costa Rican jungle, where you'll stay in comfortable dormitories throughout your visit.

DAYS 3 TO 7 · COMMUNITY IMMERSION IN YORKIN

  • Start each day with a hearty breakfast at the lodge with your Tour Director.
  • For the next five days, you’ll be involved in a community project, contributing to the preservation of the Bribri's natural and cultural heritage by participating in activities such as nursery maintenance (including soil preparation, seedling transplantation, and tree planting), trail upkeep, infrastructure development for tourism, and teaching English to the local community. You’ll work on the project for 4 to 6 hours each day. (Lunches will be prepared by the community.)
  • In the afternoons, you will discover the local culture through various activities, including a chocolate tour to explore cocoa cultivation, practicing archery, engaging in crafts, learning about medicinal plants, hiking in the forest, and swimming in the river.
  • After a full day of activities, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner in the community and immerse yourself in Bribri cultural traditions through storytelling, language lessons, and deeper insights into their customs.
  • Return to your lodge at the end of every day for a well-deserved night’s rest.

DAY 8 · YORKIN - PUERTO VIEJO DE TALAMANCA

  • Begin the day with a hearty breakfast at the lodge with your Tour Director.
  • Complete your community project with the Bribri, making your final contributions to their cultural and environmental preservation efforts.
  • Enjoy your last lunch with the community, celebrating your shared experiences and achievements.
  • Say your farewells as you depart for Puerto Viejo de Talamanca and head to the beautiful beach of Punta Uva for some time to unwind and soak in the tropical paradise.
  • Enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant before checking in to your hotel for the night.  

DAY 9 · PUERTO VIEJO DE TALAMANCA - SAN JOSÉ

  • Begin the day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • Head to Cahuita National Park, where you can explore stunning white sand beaches, coconut trees, and vibrant coral reefs, while observing local wildlife like howler monkeys.
  • Enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant before travelling back to San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
  • Check in at your hotel in San José and enjoy your final dinner of the trip at the hotel restaurant.

DAY 10 · SAN JOSÉ - DEPARTURE

  • Begin your day with breakfast at the hotel with your Tour Director.
  • With your head and luggage full of memories, make your way to Juan Santamaría International Airport to catch your flight home.
